HISTOIRE DU CONSOLAT ET DE L'EMPIRE $950 THIERS, M.A. 1845 Meline, Cans et Compagnie 6 vols, 1/4 lth, appox 700 pp. each, 7 x 11, ill., in French, Fine. A beautiful set of this famous history of the Napoleonic Era. Louis Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), French statesman and historian, was elected the first President of the Third Republic (1871-73). This famous work was first published in France in 1845-1862. During the fifteen years it took to complete this work, the author read and annotated the documents in the state archives, the thirty thousand letters which composed Napoleon's personal correspondence, the letters of his ministers, generals, aides-de-camp and police agents, in fact the greater portion of the manuscript memoirs in the possession of private families. This monumental work is one of the most important works dealing with Napoleon and his era. The most attractive set of books I have ever had.

HISTORY OF THE WAR IN THE PENINSULA AND IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE: From A.D. 1807 to A.D. 1814 $85 Napier, William 4 volumes, 1842 Sherman & Co London, ex-lib, engravings, wonderul maps, order of battles, appendix. The interor has considerable foxing though it is still easily readable. The covers are worn and darkened with age. Gilt lettering on spine. On a positive note the bindings are still strong. Set has library markings from a long time ago. In 1828 the first volume of the History appeared. It was at once seen that the great deeds of the Peninsular War were about to be fitly commemorated. The excitement which followed the appearance of each volume is proved by the innumerable pamphlets issued by those who believed themselves to be attacked, and by personal altercations with many distinguished officers. But the success of the book was proved still more by the absence of competition than by these bitter controversies. This success was due to a combination of qualities which have justly secured for Napier the title of being the greatest military historian England has produced. When in 1840 the last volume of the History was published, his fame not only in England but in France and Germany was safely established.
